Orthopaedic surgeons are surgeons who specialise in issues surrounding bones, ligaments, joints, muscle and tendons. Orthopaedic surgeons typically deal with patients of all ages experiencing a variety of problems including those from injuries, deformities and fractures. Whilst some orthopaedic surgeons are able to treat a wide variety of issues, others may specialise in specific areas with specialisations including hip and knee, foot and ankle, spine, shoulders and hands amongst others.
When to see an orthopaedic surgeon
Your GP might refer you to see an orthopaedic surgeon if you are experiencing any of the symptoms below:
- An injury or accident has left you with muscle, joint, or bone pain
- You feel unstable when walking or standing
- You are experiencing chronic pain
This is not an exhaustive list and as such, you should always consult with your GP if you suspect any orthopaedic problems.
