General Surgeons
General surgeons perform surgeries on the abdominal organs, such as the stomach, oesophagus, large and small intestine, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and appendix. General surgeons can also choose to sub-specialise in one or more disciplines, such as trauma surgery, laparoscopic surgery, colorectal surgery, breast surgery, vascular surgery, endocrine surgery, transplant surgery, surgical oncology, or paediatric surgery.
When to see a general surgeon
In most cases, you will be referred to see a general surgeon. Since the scope of the procedures general surgeons perform is very wide, there are many accidents and diseases that will require a general surgeon’s care. You might be treated by a general surgeon if:
- You need to undergo an operation in your abdominal area
- You require a transplant
- In case of trauma, such as skin burns
- You need to undergo weight loss surgery
- Other surgeries and procedures that fall within the scope of general surgeon field of work
Remember to always consult with your GP if you’re unsure or experiencing any issues.
