Sometimes, all the exercise and dieting in the world doesn’t seem to remove fat in certain areas. Like under the chin. Or on the hips. Liposuction is a well-known option. Yet other injectable treatments have emerged as a fat-dissolving alternative. One example is the Aqualyx solution.

How does the Aqualyx treatment work?

The Aqualyx treatment involves the targeted administration of injections containing desoxychol-acid. This causes instability among the fat cells by dissolving the membrane that surrounds the fat cells. After it latches onto the membrane. This instability causes a release of the fatty acids from the cells. Which are then purged by the natural processes of the body.

Aqualyx is suitable for treatment in most parts of the body where fat accumulates. Except the area around the eye.

What about the procedure?

The process may vary based on where a person is receiving the injections. Still here are some basic steps you might undergo when receiving Aqualyx injections:

  • Your doctor will first discuss your treatment goals with you.
  • The area where you’re getting Aqualyx injected is cleaned.
  • You will receive an injection of local anesthetic to numb the area and reduce discomfort.
  • Your doctor will then inject the Aqualyx solution into the targeted area of your body. The amount of Aqualyx used and the number of injections will depend on the area being treated.
  • An ultrasound device is used to ensure an even distribution of Aqualyx in the targeted area.

The procedure usually takes anywhere from a 30 minutes to one hour. You may need up to eight treatments to see the full effect.

Once Aqualyx dissolves the unwanted fat, the effect usually lasts around a year. But this varies from one individual to another. In any case you can have it reapplied.

If you gain weight following the procedure, it’s possible results diminish.

Any downsides?

Aqualyx isn’t without its side effects. A doctor should discuss these with you before undergoing the procedure. Examples include:

  • bruising
  • redness
  • skin irritation
  • swelling

A less common side effect is scarring, which has been reported but isn’t known to occur with any regularity.

It’s also possible you could have an allergic reaction to one or more of the substances present in Aqualyx.

Hence Aqualyx should not be given in the following circumstances:

  • People younger than 18 years of age.
  • People older than 65 years of age.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • Persons with a history of severe anaphylactic/allergic reactions
  • People who suffer from serious organic or systemic disease including autoimmune diseases.
  • Patients who have active skin conditions in the area treated.
